As I'm busy giving you background, I figured I'd better finish filling you all in. So, here's Moira's story, in all it's glory and despair.
We found out early that Moira's placenta wasn't functioning properly. She had absent end diastolic cord flow, and was classified as IUGR - Intrauterine growth restricted. At 28 weeks it suddenly changed to reverse diastolic cord flow. The doctors decided we had to take her then and there. She was born at 28 weeks, 1 day, and weighed just 1 pound, 5 ounces. She lived in the NICU for 106 days - almost 4 months - before she could come home. She suffered a grade III brain bleed, NEC - or Necrotizing Entercolitis - and was on oxygen for the first couple months of her life. We almost lost her 3 times.
She went through more in her first year of life than most people go through in their lifetimes. She's faced challenges since her conception, and yet she's managed to prevail through everything. Now, at 14 months old, she has speech and cognitive delays and receives therapy 4 times a week. She's finally starting to catch up and we're so proud of her. So, if you have a preemie, keep hope! Things will turn out for the best. Moira is living proof.
