Moira's story

As I'm busy giving you background, I figured I'd better finish filling you all in. So, here's Moira's story, in all it's glory and despair.
We found out early that Moira's placenta wasn't functioning properly. She had absent end diastolic cord flow, and was classified as IUGR - Intrauterine growth restricted. At 28 weeks it suddenly changed to reverse diastolic cord flow. The doctors decided we had to take her then and there. She was born at 28 weeks, 1 day, and weighed just 1 pound, 5 ounces. She lived in the NICU for 106 days - almost 4 months - before she could come home. She suffered a grade III brain bleed, NEC - or Necrotizing Entercolitis - and was on oxygen for the first couple months of her life. We almost lost her 3 times.
She went through more in her first year of life than most people go through in their lifetimes. She's faced challenges since her conception, and yet she's managed to prevail through everything. Now, at 14 months old, she has speech and cognitive delays and receives therapy 4 times a week. She's finally starting to catch up and we're so proud of her. So, if you have a preemie, keep hope! Things will turn out for the best. Moira is living proof.

About the family

I decided I ought to let you all know who we are, and our basic background.
Jay and I were married December 12, 1990. Margo Elizabeth was born 5 years later, a healthy screaming newborn. Mallory Taylor followed on her heels just 2 years later. Happy with our family, Jay and I decided we were done having kids. But in the 6 years that followed, my longing for another baby grew almost unbearable. Finally, Jay and I gave in. Lathan Milo, commonly referred to as Milo, is now almost four. 2 years later, we found ourselves pregnant again, with yet another girl. However, Moira Kassidy's story didn't turn out as well as the others. She was born at 28 weeks and spent 106 days in the NICU before she came home. Her whole story deserves another post (or 3). She's now a little over 1, and is experiencing delays due to her difficulties. But she's starting to catch up, and is such a happy little girl.
Well, that's us. Happy reading!

I give in!

Ok, I finally gave in. I'm going to start a blog!
I'm going to jump right in here, with some profound thoughts.
On my way to pick Mallory up from ballet lessons tonight, a bank commercial came on. Basically, it was saying, Hey, refinance with us and you'll have a bunch more money to do whatever you want - big bath tub, big TV, new kitchen, etc. But there was a phrase at the end.
" Come to us and we'll give you more to enjoy life."
That really got me thinking. When we're sitting down, enjoying our new 60 inch TV, what are we really enjoying? Certainly not life. When did things change so much that material possessions became our life? When did dads start to prefer to spend time watching a football game than playing catch with their sons? When did moms spend more time working on their appearance than quality time with their kids? Why is a clean house more important than a happy family?
These are all things that almost everybody needs to give thought to. At the end of the day, will it have mattered more that you scrubbed the kitchen, or that your kids know that you care about them?
Compare today's young kids with our childhoods. How different are today's teenagers from our teenage years? It's not like anything changed genetically with humans in that time. Why is there such a problem today with disrespect, theft, and things like that? Look to the home, where kids spend more time than anywhere else. Give them a healthy place to develop. Give them love, and kindness, and learning opportunities so they can develop to be the best people they can be. This is what we all need - not giant TV's and clean kitchens!
